Two-Hander

As the play opens in a spartan rehearsal hall, Thomas played by Rick Miller), a weary playwright is working  on his script based on Sacher-Masoch’s book.  He has been holding auditions to cast the show, and is ready to quit for the day.  As he is about to leave in barges Vanda, (the astonishingly Carly Street),  dragging her tickle trunk behind her.  She is loud, vulgar – a  brassy  dominatrix,  not at all what  he has in mind for the part.   But a trapped in the theatre by a thunderstorm, Vanda sets out to show Tom she is above all an actress. And a good actress can play genteel, elegant and demure.  She flirts. She teases. She whines.  She begins to explore the boundaries of Thomas’s  sexual comfort level and tests his confidence. She dons a Victorian gown and  is transformed from the brassy broad into the cultivated character he has in mind.

It’s a wholly theatrical play, a two hander which explores fetishes and fantasies and depends on raunchy actorly artifice.

As Vanda critiques Tom’s script she  gets into his  head, which allows her to eventually degrade him and render  him impotent with seductive energy. Whether as an actress or as a whore,  Vanda   well  knows the objective in the bedroom or on stage is the same: to be an object of desire. The façade has changed with the costume, but her sexual power remains the same.

Carly Street, who won the Dora Award and the Toronto Theatre Critic’s Award as best actress, gives a standout performance.  The multi-talented, multi-lingual, Rick Miller, (who entertained with his band after the show on opening night) is equally perfect foil. He is no less a magnetic force than she is. The two in tandem work so well that the audience becomes a part of the action -  voyeurs eavesdropping on  what makes intimacy intimate. There are no pat conclusions.

Saint Rita

A statue of St. Rita of Cascia, patron saint of abused women, stands in a niche at Mission San Luis Obispo.
St. Rita endured 18 years of insults, physical abuse and infidelities in her marriage. Her husband was stabbed to death by his own neighbors. Later, Rita’s own sons mistreated her. St. Rita’s statue has a red dot on her forehead, representing the spot where she was pierced by Christ’s crown of thorns.
Similar abuse exists in San Luis Obispo history. Famed late 19th century osteopathic physician Thomas A. Still of La Panza had nine children. Two of his daughters married abusive men, only to return to the Still Ranch in Annette.
Ellen Still became a teacher on the Carrisa Plains and happily married Earl Newsome. Dabirma Still Maclean became the postmistress at La Panza, where her son Othar listened to stories of the ranch hands and miners and wrote about them under the name Angus Maclean. He told us how his father had gambled, drank and beat Dabirma.
Most women didn’t have nearby families to provide refuge. As late as the mid-1970s, when women would seek assistance from city and county authorities there was little that could be done.

Sixties

As Emma Peel in The Avengers, Diana Rigg, with the help of some gloriously talented stunt men, kicked butt and took names. She was a male fantasy just on her accent alone. Rigg also was a Bond girl, all be it a George Lazenby Bond girl.

CiCi

American teen CiCi Bellis fought back after losing the first set, but ultimately came up short in her second round match Thursday night at the US Open.

Bellis -- who on Tuesday at age 15 became the youngest player to win a US Open match since 1996 -- lost to 48th-ranked Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.

Eva

Molly Ringwald began her career as an actress on "The Facts of Life" during the 1980s. After one season, her character disappeared from the series. Some might think that would be the end of a career for a teenager, but Molly's time in the spotlight was far from over. The actress went on to be queen of the teen flicks after her exit from the television series. She starred in several films by John Hughes. "The Breakfast Club" is still shown on television regularly, but Mathilda did not channel her mother's character from that film during their Target shopping trip. Mathilda is the daughter of Ringwald and Panio Gianopoulos.
During the shopping trip, the mother and daughter found a poster for "Sixteen Candles" in the store. The poster featured Molly making her iconic head tilt pose, and it was being used to promote the sale of DVD's for $5. Mathilida then stood next to the poster and posed for her mom and her mom's camera tilting her head in the same manner. It is not known if the little girl posed on her own or if he mother prompted the pose.

Sin City

Rosario Dawson, reprising her role as Gail, one of the femme fatales running Sin City, uses her feminine wiles to lure a man to his doom with a little help from Jamie Chung in a new clip released from “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”, TheWrap said.
“I hate being left alone,” she purrs to her unsuspecting victim. “When I'm alone it makes me want to do all kinds of crazy things.” The guy on the receiving end of her comment obviously thinks he's in for a fun time, but when she tells him she needs something from her trunk, it's a different kind of action that's sprung upon him. Chung is replacing original cast member Devon Aoki in the role of Miho.

Gillanarchy

It's said that life slows down in Los Angeles, as compared with brisker, more bustling cities such as London or New York.
But not for Karen Gillan. If anything life for the flame-haired Scottish actress has sped up since she moved to the West Coast 18 months ago.
She's made several movies in several genres - a romantic comedy (The List), an action fantasy (Guardians of the Galaxy) and a paranormal horror (Oculus). She has also shot a pilot for ABC called Selfie, which was recently picked up for a series.
"I'm not here on holiday," she explains in her suite at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.
"I'm here because there's lots of opportunities career wise. Parts here are amazing for girls my age."
It was a film that brought her to L.A. in the first place - Oculus, a frightener from the producers of Paranormal Activity. She was in her childhood home in Inverness, when her L.A. agents demanded that she submit an audition for the film.
So Gillan set up a camera in her bedroom and called her father, John, a nursing-home manager.

Culture Park

The elegant works of porcelain design artist Lili Yang grace mural walls at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and at Yingge’s Creative Culture Park, while her signature design Blue Butterflies Dancing Among Flowers adorn state banquet dinnerware.
Her works are also on display at the Pingtung Winery.
Yang, known as the Queen of Porcelain Art, is one of the few porcelain design artists in the country who has received international acclaim.
Recently, she was commissioned to create a showpiece mural at Hong Kong’s Maritime Square shopping complex.
Yang came from an impoverished background and did not receive a higher education, yet she has earned a top-notch reputation after overcoming difficulties throughout her life.
Born in Taipei, she gave up pursuing education after high school, when her father passed away.
